INTRODUCTION
TO
BROCA'S AREA

Broca's
Area. You probably have never heard of them, unless you have worked with them -- John
Sosnowski and Mike Delaney. They are living in a small town in
SW Michigan and are currently unsigned to a label, but I hope that will change in the near
future for them, as I listen to their music on a very regular basis. They are one of the
most diverse bands for sound imagery I have heard as yet.
It is my opinion that when you
listen to music and it can make you *feel* certain ways that you normally don't experience
in every day life, then the music has been successful in that respect. This is one thing I
have experienced about Broca's Area is that their music pulls the listener into a
reactive type of personal interaction with it, the music becomes you and vice versa. Which
is a big plus relative to the sound of Broca's Area, because it is incredibly
good, ambient by nature on many of their tapes, soothing yet it can also instill anxiety
and fear, joy and happiness -- human emotions that are integral parts of our lives, and
oftentimes lacking. Other sounds you will hear with Broca's Area are a myriad of
sequences, quitar, loops, great drumming and quite a bit of Noise.
Over the past year, I have received
ten tapes from Broca's Area of various works and collaborations. I find Broca's
Area to have a wide array talent creating sound in the fields of electronica,
ambient, noise, experimental, techno-edge and. Broca's Area has worked in
collaboration on their releases with D. Michael McNamara
<----(spoken word which is fabulous!), Dick Metcalf Zzaj Productions, Dave P. Holusha (Against
the Sky) daveh (at) villagenet.ne, and Joshua Peck (Merigars) dustbowl (at) scn.org,
in music ranging from ambient, EBM, noise, astral soundscapes and music rooted in jazz. I
believe they have never met any of the artists they collaborated with, which gives an
artist special insight into ones own music production, talent and creation.
As much as I dislike targeting a
band into a sound-genre-reference, I feel it necessary to say that if you enjoy FSOL, Scar
Tissue, NON, Download, EM:T, The Orb, Drones Compilations, Scorn and Skinny Puppy, you
would most likely enjoy Broca's Area immensely.
To find out more about Mike and
John, click over to the interview. Their discography is enormous -- be sure to check it
out, especially if you are looking for someone to remix in the future, or just need some
new sounds to listen to. If you are a Label reading this, ask Broca's Area for
a Demo, you wont regret it -- and you may just want to sign them. Someone is going to
*snatch* these guys up fast!
I have also done a few reviews of
their music which can be found in the reviews section by clicking on the review or
discography button in this feature article.
Many thanks to John and Mike for
taking the time to work with me on this feature article for April, 1998. They were
great to work with over the past year. Special thanks to D. Michael McNamara for his
patience in helping me to get his wonderful poetry here to last sigh. To read it, click on
his name!
Thanks also goes out to Michael C.
Lund for technical advice and moral support on building this feature article and
consulting with the sounds.
