With their colorful concoction of
high-bpm, sample heavy, techno-Hungarian-folk, Széki Kurva is one of the
freshest electronic dance music providers of the moment. Their CD releases begin in
highest gear, and maintain their stormy pace clear to the end. Much of their music is
good, clean (or dirty) fun that mixes together every conceivable type of music from
hip-hop to classical; techno to folk; punk to cabaret. The vocals, which are alternatively
delivered in Hungarian and English, display an irreverent, anti-establishment attitude in
line upon line of rash, humorous rhetoric. However, often the slapstick is merely a thin
sugar coating of lyrics that deal with some of the more serious and depressing facts of
our day (see the lyrics section of this feature).
Széki Kurva initially
formed in 1992, and released a number of cassettes on their own, before signing with Iris
Light in 1996. Apparently, a friend of label owner Adam Sykes had played
him a song by Széki Kurva over the phone, and in a state of complete
euphoria, Sykes called up Széki-front man Matyi saying
that he wanted to release all of the band's records forever -- or, so at least the story
goes (read about Széki Kurva's history, their signing with Iris
Light, and their views on the music industry in our exclusive interview with Matyi
and Pinky). On Iris Light, Széki Kurva has so
far had three CDs released, the latest -- The Fearless Vampire Killers -- has just
come out, and is reviewed in this edition of Last Sigh (see the
Discography section).
The band holds nothing but contempt
for the established music industry, as witnessed by their Manifesto, which
accompanies their various releases, and their formation of The Little Goats, an
organization about whose activities precious little is known, except for their dedication
to fight the major record labels to the very end. To further undermine the British music
climate, the Székis have established a pirate radio station, which
terrorises London with its relentless transmission of jungle.
Last Sigh is proud
to bring this glimpse into the activities of Széki Kurva -- our
"feature artist" for August, 1998.
