Interview With

War-N
of
Fishtank No. 9

This Interview was conducted on 17 February, 1998 by Mike Santarpia for Last Sigh with War-N of F9 via Email.

Last Sigh: Where do you live?

War-N: Worthing in England

Last Sigh: Did you go to college? If so what was your major?

War-N: I attended college for a year, majoring in music composition.

Last Sigh: What bands did you like growing up?

War-N: Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Depeche Mode, Isao Tomita, Wendy Carlos

Last Sigh: What bands do you like now?

War-N: Same as above plus Bel Canto, Dead Can Dance, Bjork, Sarah McLachlan ... and SO many more.

Last Sigh: What were your influences to want to make music?

War-N: I started as a way to emulate the artists I loved. Now I do it to stay sane.

Last Sigh: What bands influenced you?

War-N: Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Depeche Mode, Isao Tomita, Wendy Carlos

Last Sigh: W hat instruments do you play if you play any? Which one(s)? which is your favorite? Which is the easiest? Hardest?

War-N: I play keyboards, and drums. I enjoy drums the most ... less care and more energetic release. I am challenged by all instruments ... I am by know means a natural when it comes to performance skills.

Last Sigh: What other interests do you have besides music?

War-N: Dreaming.

Last Sigh: Do you like any other aspects of the music industry like engineering or producing etc..?

War-N: I find production interesting, but I would rather just concentrate on the writing and let those qualified individuals take care of the rest.

Last Sigh: Is there anything you would like to accomplish in the music industry that you haven't yet?

War-N: Simple ... support myself!!

Last Sigh: Have you played with any bands previous to this one? If so which ones?

War-N: I was in a synth pop band called Studio II then a tribal/industrial band called ... of Skin & Saliva.

Last Sigh: How did the band meet? And where?

War-N: Actually ... F9 is just little old me. So the band met about 27 years ago in England :-)

Last Sigh: Why did you choose your name? What does it mean?

War-N: My project studio is called Fishtank Soundworks, so I just went with Fishtank ... which was already taken ... enter NUMBER 9

Last Sigh: Do you have any other albums that were releases on other labels? Or is the one you are on currently your first?

War-N: ITSELF is the first F9 album.

Last Sigh: What other labels did you pursue beforesigning to this one?

War-N: None ... COPwas the label that released my last band (OSAS) so I just went with them for F9 too.

Last Sigh: How long did it take to record the album?

War-N: About a year for the writing and about 3 months for the recording and production.

Last Sigh: Which is your favorite song on the
album? Why?

War-N: Smashing the Mirror. it means the most to me lyrically (go read em). Plus I like the richness of the music.

Last Sigh: Is that also your favorite song to perform live? if no then which one?

War-N: Fishtank has never played live.

Last Sigh: Is your band on any soundtracks or compilations? If so which ones?

War-N: A couple of COP compilations (Infiltrate & Corrupt and The COP comp). Also a comp called CYBERBABIES. There is a possiblity or F9's cover of Yazoo's 'Situation' appearing on the next Newer Wave Compilation released by 21st Circuitry. Also the March issue of SIDELINE has an F9 track on the accompanying CD.

Last Sigh: Have you made any videos?

War-N: None yet.

Last Sigh: What is in the future for your band?

War-N: Keep writing and expand the sound a bit.

Last Sigh: When can we expect to see another album?

War-N: Most likely Fall' 98

Last Sigh: Do you see the band staying with the current label?

War-N: Unless you hear otherwise ... yes!

Last Sigh: What do you think about industrial music in general? Do you feel Industrial music is dead? Do you see a future for industrial music? Do you see it
becoming more popular?

War-N: What do you think about the "mainstream" bands like NIN, Marilyn Manson, Filter, Gravity Kills and Stabbing Westward? I like them all ... they have decent pop songs, which is a good thing ... no?

Last Sigh: What do you think about MTV and the music award shows?

War-N: MTV ... sells ad space people choice type awards are a good thing, but I don't get the "panel of
judges' deals (Grammys etc) isn't that just like a music critic handing out trophies?

Last Sigh: Is there anything you would like to add to any of your fans or future fans who might be reading this?

War-N: Fans: Thanks for your continued support.
