Parzival

I was lucky to have met Parzival during my visit to Denmark this past February, 1999, and to have witnessed their live performance at Loppen. I found them to be quite witty and very serious about their music which is very original in todays terms of the "scene" we document here at Last Sigh Magazine. Keep your eyes and ears on Parzival. They offer a unique and fascinating view of Crusades/Renaissance music in the near future. Special Thanks to R. Christensen for making this interview possible.

Last Sigh: Where are you from and how many people are in the band?

Parzival:  We do not remember where we are from, but we are definitely Russians. And our number... We are many.

Last Sigh: Can you tell me about the name, Parzival? Where did you find it and what significance does it have to your music?

Parzival: Parzival was the third and last king of the Holy Grail. And significance... The significance is full and absolute.

Last Sigh: How would you describe your music to someone who has not yet heard it?

Parzival: We play gothic music, but it has nothing to do with that what is called "gothic rock", because our music is renaissance and not decay.

Last Sigh: When you perform live, how many people work together and what instruments do you use? Where have you performed live in the recent past? Any chance for a US tour in the future?

Parzival: We are 3 permanent artists - one of us is vocalist and 2 others play kettle- drums and horns and make back-vocals. Our latest performance was at Loppen, Christiania, Denmark. And yes, we would like to perform in USA and we hope we will.

Last Sigh: How did the members of Parzival come together? You are all Russian. Did you know each other before you reached Denmark or did you meet there?

Parzival:We all met here in Denmark.

Last Sigh: When I spoke with you in February, 1999, I told you "I missed all of the music from the 1980s" and you said I "missed nothing." What did you mean by that? What do you think about the "Industrial and Pop music" from that time, the 1980s?

Parzival:  What we think about it? We prefer not to think about it. We are busy composing our own music.

Last Sigh: Your ideas about "Pop" music were also quite interesting, would you like to share your thoughts with us here in terms of societal influence? That is, how do you see society influencing Pop music today, and how do you perceive Pop music influencing people today?

Parzival:  We hope that our music soon will be considered as Pop, because Pop means music for everyone. We are not underground though we are called it often. The underground music was the reflection to the societal and cultural prohibitions, but now when all cultural prohibitions are broken, the term "underground" becomes obsolete.

Last Sigh: That leads me into wondering about your own influences in your creating the music of Parzival. What bands, if any, influenced you in the past relative to your music you create today?

Parzival: Our influences are classical and religious music.

Last Sigh: What training do you have in music or voice?

Parzival: All of us rehearse quite often in music as well as singing.

Last Sigh: You have a new CD coming out soon, what is the title of that CD and where can people order it if they want to purchase it?

Parzival: The CD is called "Anathema Maranatha" - it comes out this summer 1999. Wehope that the CD will appear in the American stores or you can order it by emailing to us.

Last Sigh: What are you plans for future releases with Parzival?

Parzival: We are working now on the next album and we plan to release it this winter. Hopefully.

Last Sigh: Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview. Is there anything else you would like to comment on?

Parzival: We wish that some of talented artists will do some great works to significate the end of millennium and the beginning of the new era in history of humankind. God help you all!!!
