Terminal 46

Email Interview Winter 1998 by
Mike Santarpia

Mike: Where are you based?

Originally from Dallas, Texas moved the band to Austin in 1993.

Mike: Did you go to college? If so what was your major?

Went to college at University of North Texas, majored in fucking up.

Mike: What bands did you like growing up?

The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, David Bowie, Einsturzende
Neubaten, Birthday Party, Diamanda Galas, The Pogues, Love and Rockets,
Hank Williams Jr.

Mike: What bands do you like now? What bands do you dislike?

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Shane Macgowan, Evil Mothers, Pigface, NIHIL
Hate is too much of an energy to exert on bands that dont have anything too
worthwhile to say.

Mike: What were your influences to want to make music? What bands
influenced you?

10 years ago I heard skinny puppy, that made me want To make music...the
bands that influence me now areNick Cave and the bad seeds and evil
mothers.

Mike: What instruments do you play if you play any? Which one(s)? Which is
your favorite?

I'm mainly a vocalist and lyricist, I co-write with Erik Gustafson, the guitar,
drum and programming pieces. Voice is my favorite instrument though.

Mike: What other interests do you have besides music? Do you like any other
aspects of the music industry do you like? Engineering or producing etc..?

Sometimes, I promote shows called the bloodfest which is a huge
rave/bondage festival featuring live bands, fetish performances, needle and
blood play and other disgusting acts.

Mike: Is there anything you would like to accomplish in the music industry
that you haven't yet?

I write music for me, not the music industry.

Mike: Have you played with any bands previous to this one? If so which ones?
How did the band meet? And where?

In high school my best friend and I had a band called The Idea. Our shows
mainly consisted of gothic sluts and cafeterias.

Mike: Why did you choose your name? What does it mean? Did you have any
other names in mind before choosing this one?

We were originally Auschwitz 46. but since there are so many idiots in the
world that want to take that name as a promotion of fascism, so then I
changed it to terminal 46. The 46 has to do with 1946.

Mike: Do you have any other albums that were releases on other labels? Or is
the one you are on currently your first? What other labels did you pursue
before signing to this one which? Did any pursue you?

Our first record was an ep called "battered, drained, forgotten." This last year
we released a full length called "Paradise Lost Me". I rarely pursue record
labels, because they listen to our stuff and go "well,  it's not industrial enough."
or it's not this or that, and I cant stand that sort of pigeonholing of music.

Mike: How long did it take to record the album? Which is your favorite song on
the album? Why? Is that also your favorite song to perform live? If no then
which one?

The album took years to write because of the mental and physical torture we
put ourselves through to get to the bottom. To get low. We wanted to get to the
truth of what we wanted to say. but once we brought Curse Mackey of the Evil
Mothers in to produce the record, the process went quickly. I think the day the
music died is the direction that i would be happiest pursuing...

Mike: Is your band on any soundtracks or compilations? If so which ones?

We are on two Reconstriction compilations, Operation Beatbox (covering
Public Enemy) and TV terror (covering Three's Company theme).

Mike: How did you become involved with the Cyberbabies comp.?

I met Micheal in Houston at a show and have been friends with him since. He
asked if we'd be a part of this comp and I said "yes micheal, i will be a part of
it...only if I can be the Cyberdaddy, and spank all these Cyberbabies"

Mike: Have you made any videos?

Yeah, in a hotel room with 3 girls, an eight ball and a donkey.

Mike: What is you favorite city to play? Favorite venue?

Phoenix, AZ

Mike: What bands have you toured with?

Evil Mothers and NIHIL

Mike: Which was your favorite band to tour with?

Whoever puts out the most...it gets really lonely..:)

Mike: What is in the future for your band?

Well i'm falling apart right now, mentally and physically, so subsequently I feel
that the band will as well. The songs for the new record are coming together
though.

Mike: When can we expect to see another album?

This spring we are releasing an ep of new stuff..

Mike: Do you see the band staying with the current label?

Y
es

Mike: What do you think about industrial music in general?

Idont like that word, because it is outdated term and a word used to categorize
such a wide spectrum of music...How can you stick Einsturzende Neubaten
and Gravity Kills in the same category...

Mike: Do you feel Industrial music is dead?

I feel music itself is dead. I dont really listen to these third and fourth
generation "industrial" bands, I would rather sit around and dig on Nick Cave.

Mike: Do you see a future for industrial music? Do you see it becoming more
popular? Do you feel industrial music as a whole is recognized by the music
industry...

I can't answer that really.

Mike: What do you think about the "mainstream" bands like NIN, Marilyn
Manson, Filter, Gravity Kills and Stabbing Westward?

I don't think that these bands should even be mentioned in the same sentence.

Mike: What do you think about
MTV and the music award shows?

I think Chris Rock is fuckin' funny

Mike: What equipment do you use?

We use traditional instrumentation and the programming is second thought
...utilizing analog synths and samplers and macintosh.

Mike: What equipment do you use live?

2 guitars, one vocal, bass, drums, analog keys, violin.

Mike: Is there anything you would like to add to any of your fans or future fans
who might be reading this?

drugs make you cool...
