Sometimes you just wanna go on and on in introducing a new artist. Then, sometimes the
artists just do it much better. Gaitor Bait Ten kids, dangerous young men with catchy
music.
You've been warned. |
Last Sigh: Who the hell are
you?
Mark 'loverboy' Filip: aka KANAL and one third of the Mighty 'Collision Substance' label
(the other 2 council of reptiles are Kurt Gluck and SimonJS).
SimonJS: of OCOSI.
GBT: aka ZERO.I.D aka MOTHBOY, one third of the CS council.
Paul: aka SADIST aka EVIL RETARD aka DAZZLER aka (fill in the blanks)
Last Sigh: What are you doing right now?
Mark: Sitting naked in my studio chair. Just before I was burning promo copy cdrs of the
new Kanal full length, "An Hommage to Atrophied Organs" to send to the Muzak
people to be remade into a more family oriented shopping experience.
Simon: At the moment i'm editing some boring video training crap down here at work so I
can edit it...fucking yawn yawn yawn.
Last Sigh: Why call yourselfs Gaitor Bait Ten?
Mark: Simon liked the name because it is the name of a notorious snuff film in which some
10 year old girls get thrown into a pit of gators. I suggested the Rose Peddlers, but it
got vetoed.
Simon: We were trying to come up with some kind of name for the project and originally it
was going to be 'Kicked to Death by Bees'. But I was looking through a book about Death
and Snuff films and saw one in their called 'Gator Bait Ten' and instantly fell in love
with it.
Paul: God Bunghole Terror
Last Sigh: Donna Summer remixes?
Mark: Nothing is sacred, a sine wave is a sine wave. Plus, I wish I had partied at Studio
54 in its prime at least once. I go to raves every night in search of that lost feeling.
Simon: No,she hasn't asked us (which is a personal shame) but she can do vocals on GBT3 if
she's up for it
Last Sigh: Describe to us the sound of GBT, be honest.
Mark: If you've heard Ocosi, and you've heard Kanal, then you won't be surprised much. If
you haven't heard either, then expect heavy dark hop lock grooves with caustic yet
sometimes melodious atmospherics. The new GBT, in creation, will go beyond this...
Simon: Def-Groove,Snuff-Core,Scum-Hop...I don't know it varies it doesn't stay the same
from track to track.
Paul: A dirty big ugly fuck off space, interupted with fat bass, beats, electronics and
pulses that don't give a fuck about you.
Last Sigh: How did you all hook up?
Mark: Through a messge board on Dub Terrorist. Simon made a post about using the name
Crawlspace for a label name. I wrote him back and said that was my idea. He gracefully
offered to kill me and my little dog too, and somewhere in there we swapped demos. It was
love at first listen.
Simon: From chatting to Mark a load, plus we loved the KANAL disc and thought a project
would be perfect..luckily its been really well recieved its a pity we don't live in the
same city...er or the same continent even!!!
Last Sigh: Who's the cutest member of GBT?
Mark: Simon will tell you he is. Even lesbians try to pick him up.
Simon: Mark, because I've never seen what he actually looks like.
Last Sigh: What's happening with the next GBT album?
Mark: I'm currently working on my part of the alblum, Paul and Simon sent the loops to me
a while ago. In a few weeks, we'll go into the studio with Robert Conroy of neutral and
Annie Anxiety. They're both going to vocals on a few tracks. It will be a double disk, one
the original disk of material, and a second disk of remixes from our partners in crime. We
want to release it at the cusp of the year we hope as a Collision Substance full length.
Simon: Some good stuff, generally harder then the first one...a lot more lock-grooves
and ground shaking bass. The addition of vocals should be a sick one ..Robert has a great
voice and Little Annie Anxiety has a voice I've admired for a while (espescially because
of her connection within the CRASS posse).
Last Sigh: Tell us a story about the making of GBT 1.
Mark: Simon and Paul sent me a DAT of the loops which had the beat and basslines with a
minimal amount of samples. I then started adding the atmospheric samples to them and
fleshing them out. Basically, Simon and Paul send me the loops and try to give me room in
them to work, and I in turn, try to respect their loops and not overwhelm them with my
samples. It's one big love-in.
Last Sigh: What do you like about your music?
Mark: In GBT, I like the fact that its not just me. Doing solo work, like Kanal, all the
time sometimes creates a loss of perspective. But with Kanal, I can be obsessive and
uncompromising, which has its moments.
Simon:That it has a lot of BOLLOCKS!
Paul: The drugs that help shape it and that no-one else sees the same thing.
Last Sigh:Tell us about Collision Substance.
Mark: Simon and I started to label because we got sick of labels liking the music
but having no money to risk releasing it. It was initially supposed to be the backyard of
our side projects, which it still is, but it is also growing to include talented cohorts.
We currently are growing bigger with better distribution. So now we will still do the 100
copy limited handmade cdr releases, and a few full lengths like the Rise|Converge
comp organized by Kurt Gluck, GBT 2, and Merdon/Harris project amongst others.
Simon: Like Mark said it just developed from an idea of putting GBT out and its
developed into something more. Hopefully we can give people a different kind of package
then other labels and give out unique music that respects the artists involved back.So far
we've had great response and support and now me and Mark have Kurt Gluck (of
Submerged) on board doing the distro and PR etc its flying even better. It's the Punk Rock
ethic of things.
Last Sigh: What do you do when you don't do that GBT thing?
Mark: I work like a chattel serf to pay my obscene rent in NYC, the city of angry filth,
and make noises for whichever project I'm on at the moment.
Simon: OCOSI, cheesey technoy loops for websites (people actually pay me for
these...you'll never hear them!!) and er.. artist intergration for CS and screaming.
LS:Who'd you like to kill right now?
Mark: People who place fashion above substance, and those that offer nothing through their
existence. Lumps of walking carbon. But I don't need to kill them, they are already dead
to those that go through life with a purpose. Hording money is not a purpose with living
for.
Simon: Good Question...er how about YOU! ... yes i'd like to kill you!!!
Last Sigh: Should we look for a stylistic change with the next
record?
Mark: Slightly with the addition of vocals on some tracks, and better production/sound
quality (I think).
Simon: Yes but i'm not going to tell...it has vocals.
Paul: A much more Ambient Gabba approach.
Last Sigh: Who'd you like to work with that perhaps you shouldn't or haven't?
Mark: People whose music I have admired in the past/present, i.e. MJ Harris, Lustmord, M.
Gira, Coil, NWW, Koner, to name a few, anyone who's music I play repeatedly at home. I
like to keep busy.
Simon: Bob Weston (drummer of Shellac), Siouxsie Soux, Godstomper... we shouldn't work
with small children.
Last Sigh: Who are the producers with the knowledge?
Mark: Those that are producing their own music. Anything else intrepretive.
Simon: Jack Endino who produces a lot of SUB POP records... his sound isn't to everyones
taste and he's produced some hideous records but his theories and techniques are really
good. Steve Albini I like and anyone who has the guts to do it themselves. P.Steve Albini,
Hypo Luxa,Tube Jerk.
Last Sigh: Describe the collaborative process of making GBT tracks.
Mark: We respect each other musically. That is the foundation. Simon and Paul give me room
to work in the loops, I, in turn, respect the direction they are taking the loops and not
force them to do anything else. I do take liberties sometimes, but only if they are
musically relevant. I'd like to say there are no ego trips in this project. We have the
opportunity to express ourselves in so many other projects.
Simon: Mark said it!!! Beats and Bass first with room for Mark and then he does his bit
and does the final production... we're never disapointed!
Last Sigh: Ever gonna take it all live?
Mark: Sure. Maybe at a Collsion Substance festival.
Simon: Love to! Know anyone who wants to put ona GATOR BAIT TEN sound system???
Paul: If the chances arise then sure, it would kick your neck off! OCOSI,TASK,GHETTO BEAST
(with Erem) and SURFACE have all done shows so morein 2000 definitely.
Simon: If someone would pay air fair to either New York (for us from London) or Vice Versa
for Mark.
Last Sigh: Future plans besides world domination?
Mark: I want to be a nettle farmer when I retire.
Simon: More CS releases , making GBT a household name, growing an orchard of small
children and jamming with my alltime hero and musical genius Paul Macartney.
Paul: More equipment, more sounds ..sound is a virus that spreads fast and wide so we're
going to explore. Who'd want to dominate this world? Leave it to the fat fucks.
Last Sigh: Last Words?
Mark: No, but thanks for the interest if you've read this far.
Simon: Yeah well done for managing to play GBT amongst your Drum and Bass choons mate
...much respect for that and for the continued support and a big Shout out goes out to the
main man Mr. John Merrick.
Visit: GBT on the
web.
