13 MG and
William Darke's Freak Show Mid-afternoon, I stop by the club and ask a roadie about the show; He tells me the doors open at 9 and the show should start by 9:30. So I go up at 9 and grumble a few curses at the Rob Zombie look alike for the next 2.5 hours. I guess I was a fool to listen to him. It wasn't all bad though ... 13 MG actually played a full song during their sound test, followed by another 15 minutes of each and every drum in their set... typical. The opening band finally started playing, but halfway through the first song, I was begging for another sound test. They sounded like Green Day playing Pigface without any samples... most of the crowd ignored them and the lead singer stomped off pouting after the last song. They mercifully didn't play more than 4 or 5 songs as I recall. To pass the time while 13 MG set up, I contemplated what I would look like with tin foil spikes. As the kiddies started playing, I noticed that I seemed to be one of the last few people watching the show onstage. Apparently I had been so enjoying my dreams of sandwich wrappings that I forgot about the bondage show that was going on behind me... that not exactly being where I get my jollies, I sat back and enjoyed the show with 5 or 6 others. Sonically, 13 MG was one of the best shows I've heard; Instruments were at the realistic levels, you could HEAR the vocals *gasp*, and they can actually play. Two of the lads videotaping the show jumped around on stage with lead singer for a while before they abandoned their cameras and just boogied down. Aside from the occasional guitarist scaling a speaker or two, the lead singer was about the only really animated one. I couldn't help but laugh my ass off after a few of the faces he made at the horde of fetishes drooling over the leatherette's with whips-n-chains in the rear. They finished their set in time to let the last act whack off for an hour before setting up. Meanwhile, the guitarist came up to me and we chatted for a few minutes. It turns out they didn't know the bondage festival was going to be on at the same time till they saw the backs of all the shaved heads. I got a free promo tape out of it too :). I'm not going to say much about William Darke's Freak Show. Only because you need to see it for yourself. They had everything from fire-eating to razor tipped yo-yo's to tight rope tricks to massive and minuscule dildo juggling. If you ever get a chance to see either 13 MG or Willie's Freak Show... quit your job if you have to... just go. Quote of the Evening: Moral of the Evening: |
