The Setlist for Chicago and from what I
understand for every show included the following songs. Please note that there was NO DAT
used and each show was indeed different from the next in terms of live improv. I witnessed
four of them, and attest to this fact !
Sulphur/74 Cello/Base Metal/Durrow Book/Gvoon - XX1/Redkerne/ Faust

In Chicago at the Smart Bar, DVOA's guests on stage included Scott Gibbons of Lilith /
Orbitonik, Eric Pounder of Pounder, Dave Wright of Not Breathing, Darryl Neudorf of
Abintra, Darren Phillips of Hellen Keller and of course Mark Spybey. This was a real treat
to see and hear all of these people play on one stage in Chicago. In terms of what tracks
were played was very good at all venues I attended which includes: Detroit, Chicago (Smart
Bar), Toronto (ReVerb) and Columbus, however PA systems were not so good at Detroit (Gold
Dollar: small venue) and Columbus (The Mad Lab). In Toronto, mixing was done on stage, so
the PA mixing wasn't effective, too bad, gave a *muddy muffled sound* to the overall show.
Dave Wright of Not Breathing gave many super shows that included his rendition of
"Stand By Your Man", of which some people didn't obviously realize what it
was. He also played about 30-45 minutes his more well known beat laden and ambient works
which has in the past been quite descriptive of Not Breathing's work.
The Chicago show at the Smart Bar was really a great time for most of us I think. Scott
and Eric were very kind to get up on stage with DVOA and Not Breathing to bring us a whole
new sound experience with Sidewinder from Download. That was such a treat ! Thanks to Eric
and Scott big time for that. The sound at this venue was excellent, the crowd was
enthusiastic and it appeared most everyone had a good time.
The venue in Detroit (The Gold Dollar) was downright scary. Bad part of town, no space
inside the club to do anything but be still and worry about your vehicle parked outside.
The stage was TEEENSY. Rather depressing. The sound had no where to go. I'll not go back
there unless I hve a couple *big* guys with me. The bands played some excellent music
despite it all!
The show in Columbus, Ohio at the Mad Lab was quite interesting. Set on stage to a
backdrop of Holiday cheer (see photos below, <grin>), DVOA and Not Breathing along
with special guest, Mark Gunderson of Evolution
Control Committee put together a spirited partial set of improv as he worked his
Theramin with the bands (barefoot no less !). The sound was *so-so* at the Mad Lab due to
an inefficient PA system for the sound needs of the bands.
Ending the tour in Toronto Canada at the ReVerb was a good time as well. There were a few
problems, a part for a drum leaving the DVOA end of things a bit late, (but they certainly
made up for it in the end), mixing on stage rendering the PA board rather useless and
leaving the sound a bit muffled (maybe that was the PA in general I am not so sure),
however the performance itself was very nice. The bands played for about 2.5+ hours total
or there abouts. Within that total, the encore lasted about an hour+. The crowd enjoyed
the heavy beats and drifting ambience of Not Breathing's set, then a superb show by Dead
Voices On Air. Fans were treated to an unusual *puppet* show after the music ended, which
was quite cute to say the least. Puppets used were "Piglet" and the blue
"Dolphin" as mastered by Dave Wright and Mark Spybey on stage. Piglet was tossed
into the crowd and snatched up quickly by a fan and taken home. The blue
"porpoise" was headed for the garbage can until I noticed, so I asked if I could
keep it. I had it autographed by the bands as a keepsake of the tour. My cat likes to play
'fetch' with it when I listen to DVOA and Not Breathing at home. The poor blue
"porpoise" did however have a 'rough' tour. It sustained a hole in the head with
a hand drill at a previous venue by one of the band members. All in all, the four venues I
was lucky to attend were great fun and the music was incredibly good. Thanks to all of you
who took part in it.
