The
Orb
And
Sun Electric
July 12, 1997
Club Kay's, Hallandale, FL
*special thanks to the publicity department at Island
Records, and the staff of 8 Track and Club Kay's*
At first, there was barely a soul
in sight, but by the end of the night/rise of the morning, the place was jamming. This was
my first time at Club Kay's, and it was a very nice first visit. The venue was more filled
with your everyday drug-induced raver kids than Orb fans, but you could
distinguish the two apart, and everyone was nice. With the friendliness of everybody and
the amplification of the sound, the show went perfect.
Sun Electric went
on around 1:30 AM. I have never heard of these guys, but I recommend their stuff for fans
of Autechre or any band off Warp UK. They played about
an hour and ten minutes, and it was a fantastic set. The two Berlin performers were heavy
at work with the large amount of knob- tweaking, synthesizers, and god knows what else
they were doing with all their gadgetry.
In between the two acts and as a filler
for the whole night, numerous DJ's spun all night. After being bored with the same song
after song, I actually did hear Pink Floyd's, "On The Run."
Me and my friends were just waiting for The Orb to explode, and soon
enough, they did.
The stage construction was a huge pyramid
which Andy Hughes and Alex Patterson performed in. The
pyramid had wings in which projections were show, both live from the crowd and morphed
computer images. The Orb appeared. They went on around 2:50 and played
about 90 minutes. In the interesting set, they played many original and alternate dance
versions of Little Fluffy Clouds, Blue Room, Towers Of Dub, Outlands,
Spanish Castles In Space, and Toxygene. I was really hoping for some tracks
off of "Orbus Terrarum," but they did not play anything off of the album.
At times when the screens showed the crowd, you could also see what was going on inside
the pyramid. Alex handled all the turntables, CD-player looking
object(s), and knobs, while Andy did synths and knobs. The crowd was
dancing at some times, but mostly just bobbing heads and enjoying the light and LOUD sound
show. The left the stage at 4:10, leaving everyone in a trance. It was an excellent show,
and be sure to catch them on the east coast soon. |
