Located in Cornwall outside of London, Iris Light is a label specializing mainly in electronically oriented "underground" music. The label was established in the summer of 1996, and is essentially a one-man operation, run by its founder -- Adam Sykes. Guided by the eclectic taste of Sykes, his laissez faire production politics, and, above all, his respect for the recording artists, Iris Light has already attracted a number of original and acclaimed musicians, both from within Britain, and from abroad.
It is Sykes' conviction that his label should stay in "motion," and not lock itself into a fixed sound or genre. One of the compelling facets of Iris Light therefore is the element of freshness and surprise that each successive release carries with it. In Iris Light's catalogue can be found soundtracks for imaginary films (Blue); techno-folk-dance music delivered by rebellious Hungarian pranksters Széki Kurva; iconoclastic noise structures from Japan (Aube); as well as the swansong of German mental explorers Maeror Tri -- to name only the extreme outposts of the musical territory explored so far. For a chronological discography, and reviews of some of Iris Light's releases, please see the discography section of this profile.
Aside from running Iris Light, Adam Sykes is also involved in creating sound for television productions and feature films -- the first major film to feature his name in the credits (Beeban Kidron's Amy Foster based on a work by Joseph Conrad) had its premiere in Europe a few months ago. He has also written poetry, and been involved in creating music for many years, a volume of his poems has already seen publication, while some of his songs will be featured on a future Iris Light compilation release. For much more information about Adam Sykes, his work and views (in his own words), read the exclusive interview section of this profile.
