~~~~~~~~~~~
This is an incredible array of electro, noise experimental, and ambient works by John,
Mike, and D. Michael. It opens with The Tube Pt.2 with
errie spacious synths and flows into tasty deep drumming that evolves into a mello tribal
beat layered with keyboards of electronic growling, siren-like whirring and atmospheric
rumblings. There are sounds of men and women softly wailing, water ? swooshing past,
gurgles of unknown origin and other assorted electronic voices giving this track an
immense amount of volume, depth and diversity. Excellent piece of work.
Dud begins with spacious
ambient sonics, background vocal samples "brain failure....brain damage...."
that add to the level of visual and aural anticipation of impending fear and a feeling of
doom but not gloom of this tracks subject matter. The injections of a single explosive
drum pound in all the right places adds a great deal of anxiety to the listeners
experience. . .this track is beautiful.
Continuing on through Works In
Progress to Junk-Rasta is more drum and bass, more of an "up" feel
to it. Lots of synth work with a backdrop of harmonics and peaceful interludes with
angelic type electronic orchestrations and a touch of tekno loops here and there. Great
percussion, very full sound. This track reminds me of later Scorn-type
material. This is one of my favs...needs to be on the first cd release! ;)
Sea Serpents is also
excellent in that Mike and John use a number of unique synth sounds to enhance the track
foundation or to create it. More spacious ambient trance-like sonics here...coupled with
strange yet friendly keyboard noises, envelope the listener with soft ambient noise. This
reminds me of Swarm, Throne and Storm of Drones compilations type of music.
The Tube (pt. 1) is
incredible as well. It blends a marching pulsating sonic wall of mello deep noise with
layered electro-harmonic streaming. There are also many synthetic samples injected.
Drowned Dog Morning has a
tribal drum track layered with the intermittent exaggerated twisted sound of an evil
growling dog -- of which could have been a star performer is some twisted Sci-fi movie
about a canine that tried to take over the Pentagon! Again the music in the final takes on
an ominous feel to it, making one wonder what's coming next...which is Animism and
incorporates vocals from Peter Gabriel's "Passion" CD, exotic
percussion and harmony. Very good indeed! If you don't get goose bumps from hearing this
you haven't lived yet.
The B Side to this tape is equally
as good as the previous and incorporates D. Michael McNamara's poetry and spoken word.
Maybe I can get him to send me the lyrics to his work in the track: And Imagine, as
it is quite a story about someone's travels -- the desert, the mountains, knowlege, sin,
through life, into death, ... "crows perched on my hood", a gold toothed
man..."And imagine that I came all this way to die", he said ..."And
imagine I came all this way to find out I'm dying", I replied. The music on this
track is kinda of jazzy, drum and bass, simple yet powerful and right in step with the
spoken word.
Stick In Your Eye is an
experimental piece with drums, samples, synth excursions into machinery sounds
(clanking...) and leads into a very high pitch of piercing noise, dropping off into the
spoken word of D. Michael McNamara in a powerful industrial-electro mix titled: Evolution.
This is another excellent piece of aural art in sound, very progressive, intense, great
vocals/lyrics, with what I believe is John on guitar that whirrs back and forth
throughout the track while McNamara speaks his piece. Excellent track.
Descant is a slower paced
track yet just as dramatic as the previous bringing drums and synths together with
overlays of hokey yet tasty snippets of tunes from the days when television was only black
and white, like from a one of those very early "Spanky and Our Gang" movies --
great samples! ;)
The Leader Within You has elements of the sounds of machines and various synth
streakings throughout and dramatic drumming in the forefront of the track. More samples
are used here where a man talks as if lecturing one of those TV self help advertizements
with the 800# to call...More sounds that remind me of Scorn, Nocturnal Emissions type of
stuff...rather eerie in fact. "It's useless to struggle Gizmoduck".
Television Is Reality reminds me of early Puppy like the stuff on Back
& Forth as far as the old style bass and tinty drumming. This track has good
samples of vocals and clanky synth sounds.
Hello Bloodsuckers is more spacially ambient with a female sample from time to time
saying: "Hello Bloodsuckers" in a sarcastic tone. Brainrot is a short
piece of heavy guitar with electro noise added for effects and drumming on the tribal
side, interesting...leading into Another Minute which was recorded live at The W.E.
Festival in May of 1996, and is an angelic harmony of gothic synths with a background of
ominous whirling and frantic effects that cresendo to intensify the sudden involvement of
blasting drums throughout the track. Get this tape! Better yet, have someone put it on CD
and get it in your local stores!!!
