Mark Spybey and friends has again brought us yet another superb release (his 5th to date) with this double CD, Piss Frond.  As I have said in the past, DVOA has the quality that you can always be assured of when buying new releases as they have been excellent in the past. So if you are a first-time reader to DVOA, I'll describe some of the music on this release for you in case you like this sort of music; and if you aren't a fan of DVOA, well that's ok too, however I think if you get this CD, you'll want them all. Nonetheless, I enjoy everything this band releases.   There are a few other reviews of releases with DVOA here on Last Sigh, so if you like what you read here, you might want to check the reviews section for more about DVOA and perhaps Not Breathing as well.
The first disc in the package is quite different in style, it is a little more upbeat, quite experimental and has a few more solemn tracks on it. It's always a treat to hear Ryan Moore's work with drums, clean and enthusiastic!   The Vancouver Canada team Spybey works with is noted below and comes through on this release with very interesting and well designed sounds that integrate smoothly with oneanother. Tribal and progressive influences are here with percussion (drums, guitar, moog and bass), vocal manipulations and beat.  Tasty treats for discerning listeners!
Disc Two (all sounds by Mark Spybey) has a sensuous ambience of quiet mediative droans and a broad range of low rumbling synths that set a mood for pensive environs -- simple beautiful and magnificent with a fine dusting of symphonics.  Not void of the wizardry of modern programming and exotic composition, there is an air of a slightly ominous tinge of spooky sounds (more like the distant dronal chanting of some ancient visitors from a far away land...), and swirling effective timbre winding around a delicious bassy back-ground.
Contibuting artists on this release are many, including Ryan Moore (LPD and Twilight Circus), Chris Houston, Alexander Varty, Sugarpill, Tom Anselmi, Finn Manniche, Pete Bourne, and Elaine Spybey (vocals from Greensleeves) with thanks to Paul Nileman.   Instruments used include cello, evil twang, drums, chroma, moog, invisible guitar, guitar, bass and vocals on a few tracks.  A diverse crew bringing us delightfully new sounds and excellent quality of music. Mark's artwork for the cover is fabulous as well! You can see it in more detail on the DVOA site.   Don't miss this release!
