The solo project of Simon Pyke, Freeform gives you a good idea of what his music is like from the name alone: no rules, flexible structure, anything goes.
Two years in the making, "Me Shape" is an eccentric clamour of unfamiliar electronics built up like towers of lego into ryhthmic compositions. Unlike most electronic music this actually sounds like it belongs on a computer, which is fitting since Pyke is a computer programmer by trade.
Even though there are a lot of tape recorded samples, the music gives the impression of plastic and synthetics. Even the slowest, most simple songs are densely layered and really complex. Quirky and hyper, Pyke masterfully blends countless layers of loops into one organized frenzy.
After a supporting slot on Autechre's recent tour of the UK and having completed recordings for labels like Warp, Skam, and Worm Interface since his debut in '95, Freeform is slowly collecting his due recognition.
