If you haven't learned not to judge a book by it's cover yet, this CD will give you a crash course in the basics of why you shouldn't. At first glance I was fully prepared for the insipid onslaught of goth, and the black and white coffin and inverted cross photos in the liner notes didn't help that any. I am pleased to say, though, that what I ended up hearing wasn't at all what I expected.
Simplistic, fairly primitive electronics are matched with treated vocals that convey a surprisingly large amount of emotion. The cyclical melodies are very subtle, but they're still effective and used to their full potential. There is nothing incredibly complex about this release, but that isn't one of it's short comings. Repetitive percussive loops, some basic piano lines, and mildly distorted vocals compose the basic electronic formula for most of the tracks. At times some common influences show through, the most obvious of which being a dubious hint of Nine Inch Nails. It's safe to say that more often than not simplicity in music is catchy, and most of these tracks are no exception.
