Jake Mandell is a classically trained pianist and has studied jazz improvisation at a university level. This is his first full length release, and it should be more than enough to silence anyone who still believes that electronic musicians derive their sounds through talentless button-pushing.
The entire scope of his electronics are played impulsively as if it were all break beats, with soft melodic tones hiding behind the abrupt rhythms. A few of these songs take on characteristics similar to Cevin Key's "Music for Cats"--absorbing intellectual dance music with enough abstract elements to keep things interesting.
Although this disk was released on Worm Interface, a London-based label, Mandell lives in the suburban bowels of America. "Parallel Processes" is over an hour of incredibly sophisticated, emotive music that's a challenge to wrap your mind around. An amazing debut that's not to be overlooked.
