Sulk is a
most ambitious debut collection of work written and performed by Julian Tulip.
Licorice combines pouting lyrics with piano driven dark classical and electronic
musical styles throughout the CD. Julian's work in Licorice has been compared to a blend
of Nick Cave and LPDots.
Recorded in San Francisco and Portland Oregon, the influences of the
80s and 90s life styles and music are heard and read in the music and the lyrics.
Powerful, and intensely rich with emotion, "Juliette Loves Me" and "The Day
Gina Lost Her Smile" [spanish guitar] are harmonic, melodic, senuous songs about slit
wrists and peace. The tracks on "Sulk" are also vivid with imagery lyric
wise and brings to mind mini "scripts" if you will, for what would make an
excellent stage play!
"Curl" is a good example of the scripticious effects the
lyrics and music from Licorice has on a person, 80s disco-edge beat and a retro
70s love story line. "Darker" is another track that exemplifies Tulips
ability to create mental images via lyrics and original classical music storyline. Great
piece of work.
Minimal electro-effects and a brief story of Graciella, who had sex
with God....the stories never end! "Funeral Jewelry and Fairy Liquid" is
an experimental track with synth effects, a woman naming off different flowering botanics
with treated vocals.
Sulk is a diverse CD and a greatly welcomed change in the
electro-acoustic scene. Piano, synth, strings, classical background, sub-harmony and
spoken word lyrics can all be found with Licorice.
