The pioneers of music to stimulate the right side of the brain -- Maeror Tri
-- came to an end in November, 1996. Yet, "new" releases from this German trio
continues to see the light of day. One of the latest is a beautiful 10" picture-disc
on Ant-Zen, which has been pressed in only 431 copies. The record
features two extended compositions entitled "Pleroma" and "Altrove",
and, as befits Ant-Zen, these belong to the noisier, more expansive end
of Maeror Tri's spectrum of music.
"Pleroma" opens with a
thundering propeller-like stream of deep, rolling percussions. Waves of treated guitar
harmonies, that gradually develop into one of Maeror Tri's incredibly
evocative thematic presences., wavers in the background like a sheet blowing in the wind.
Halfway through the piece, quasi-rhythmic screams of distorted noise are introduced,
momentarily threatening to throw the piece into complete chaos. However, increasingly the
separate sounds bleed into each other, and come to constitute a saturated sound carpet,
beneath which the guitar thematics -- distantly audible -- flow on like a memory buried
beneath the concrete structure of time.
The sound quality of
"Altrove" is equally rich and overwhelming. Beginning with a low whir that
slowly escalates in volume, this piece too reaches a state of being an almost solid
structure of vibrating noisy and melodic frequencies, amidst which soaring thematics
briefly materialize, only to be washed away again in the racing storm of pure sound. The
piece is like a wave carrying with it all manner of sonic debris that is nearly completely
hidden in the forward rush -- rhythmic elements are present but their cadence is all but
lost, and melodic guitar surfaces shine through bleakly. The beauty and detail is there
for the listener to dive in, discover and savor.
