This compilation from England's Iris Light is the first from the label. It draws you in with names like Rapoon, Muslimgauze and Zoviet*France, and then introduces you to some of the lesser known, but equally talented bands on the label.
Penumbra's "Duet for Horn and Theramin" is a simple track of disquieting drones and a faint, ghoulish halloween scream. If you're paying attention you can tell that Penumbra is a side project of Zoviet*France, since the exact same scream appears in their track that follows.
Zoviet*France loop a subtle, hypnotic tapping noise layered over interesting textures and harmonics. Ashfelt and Rapoon round out the calm end of the disk with their nearly ambient simplicity. These four tracks act as an intro; an atmospheric buffer for the varied beats to follow.
Zuvuja is where the tempo picks up. Although the first 30 seconds of the song hint at a continuation of the minimalism, it gives rise to the first solid percussion on the disk, as well as the first vocals. Lucha is another rhythmic track, which builds itself up on an interesting loop.
"Trailmix" is the first material from Muslimgauze to be released since Bryn Jones' untimely death earlier this year. It's a haunting beat-oriented song of the quality he was renown for; proof that his musical legacy will far exceed his lifetime.
Marineville introduce some organ and breakbeats--an interesting combo--and the Filter Kweens, no relation to the vaccum cleaner brand, cap off with a hyper mish mash of chaotic sounds.
"Marconi Point" is a benefit album for the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh. With great packaging, an amazing list of bands and a good cause to top it all off, you can't go wrong with this CD.
