I usually don't pay much
attention to singles, since often times they only serve up a small portion of second rate
B-sides, useless remix fodder, or album tracks you've already heard. Either that or
they're repetitive enough to start banging your head into a wall. The members of Mesh
claim they are out to turn the single back into an art form, and although this seems like
a hard task to undertake this release is proof of their word.
One would assume that hearing four different mixes of "Fragile" in a row would
be as repetitive as it gets, but there is enough diversity among the tracks to keep things
interesting. Each remix seems to pick a good trait out of the song and accentuate it's
better qualities, while at the same time adding some new touches and directions to make
the listen more bearable. The resident B-side, "I Don't Expect to be Right", is
a worthwhile song that you can tell wasn't just left off an album and stuck here as a last
resort. It is a catchy track in the style Mesh are fast becoming known for, which is
basically what you get when you take synthpop influences and apply them to a 90's setting
with the latest technology in full force. |
