CENSOR

Track Listing

1. Censor (Extended Mix)
2. Punk In Park Zoo's
3. Yes He Ran
4. Censor

The first song to be released off VIVISect VI as a single was retitled from "Dogshit" to "Censor." As usual, this single is attractive, less because of the extended version of the title track, than for the inclusion of a pair of non-album songs (which were, however, later included on the CD release).
Rather than the distorted sequence of radio interference, which opens the original version of "Dogshit," the extended version leaps right into a segment of heavy, dance-oriented percussions. Following the example of previous Skinny Puppy remixes, the vocals and individual sounds of the song have again been isolated and emphasized in the new mix. Particular attention has been given to the percussion, of which there are long solos interjected into the song, as well as a number of variations and extra rhythm effects thrown in towards the end of the piece. The extended mix of "Censor" diverges sufficiently from the original to make it worth a listen, however, the flow and integrity of the original song has been almost completely obliterated in the mixing process.
The two original tracks on Censor are appropriate b-side songs. Both tracks feel as if they could have been included on VIVISect VI, but in the case of "Punk In Park Zoo's," the similar "State Aid" fit in better on the album, and the same is true for "Yes He Ran" which resembles "Who's Laughing Now." Neither of the pieces feature the discernible presence of Nivek Ogre, but both tracks contain numerous media samples. "Punk In Park Zoo's" is a brief, all-out noise fest with crashing metallic percussions and sounds inverted and sampled backwards. "Yes He Ran" falls at the other end of Skinny Puppy's musical spectrum with its dance-oriented (b)rap beat, synth loops and extensive use of effect sounds and samples.
The final track on the single -- "Censor" -- is simply the album version of "Dogshit" under its new title.
