Skinny Puppy's
first single release features remixed versions of "Dig It" from Mind: The
Perpetual Intercourse and "The Choke" from Bites (the European
12" on Play It Again Sam additionally included "Film.")
Since the remix version of
"Dig It" replaced the original mix on the CD release of Mind, this is the
comonly known version of the song. Where the original mix of "Dig It" had the
layered and somewhat chaotic sound quality prevalent on Mind, certain elements and
sounds have been separated out and emphasized on the remix. Most notably, the percussion
and guitar samples have been isolated, making for a more danceable track, but also the
vocals have been lifted to the fore of the mix and given a more dynamic treatment. In
itself the remix version of "Dig It" is a decent enough dance track, it is only
sad that it to such a great extent has replaced the original version.
The "Re-Grip" mix
of "The Choke" is stylistically very close to the "Dig It" mix. The
percussions, vocals and samples have been given a more dynamic sound in the new mix, and
the case of "The Choke" this approach seems more successful than on "Dig
It." The individual elements in the music do not appear quite as isolated, and, in
general, "The Choke" has a smoother and more complete feel to it.
