WORLOCK
Track Listing
1. Worlock (ed)
2. Worlock (lp mix)
3. Tim Omen 1
4. Brak Talk
The second single from the Rabies
album is one of Skinny Puppy's best. Not only does Worlock include
the bonus track "Brak Talk," and an interesting version of "Tin Omen,"
it also features one of the bands most successful remixes.
"Worlock" in its
"edit" form opens the CD. It is an extended mix that alternates segments from
the original album version, with segments that isolate or emphasize certain elements of
the song. Thus, there is a passage in the "edit," where the gorgeous synth theme
stands alone, there are brief segments of isolated guitar samples and Charles Manson
singing The Beatles' "Helter Skelter," and, of course, moments
that focus on the percussive elements of the song. All in all, this "edit" of
"Worlock" is very well produced, and although it has been tailored for the
dancefloor, it retains, and elaborates upon, all the outstanding qualities of the original
song.
The "edit" is
followed by the "lp mix" of "Worlock," which is identical to the album
version. Likewise, the version of "Tin Omen" included on the single, at first
appears to be indistinguishable from the album version, however, it soon becomes apparent
that Nivek Ogre has gained the upper hand in the vocals of this version.
Lastly, the single contains
"Brak Talk," which is a noisy, but groovy little tune. Ogre's vocals
are distorted out of all proportion, and appear purposely obnoxious and comical. Along
with a host of samples, the song features an elaborate, plastic rhythm scheme, and is in
all respects a true Skinny Puppy track.
