What an
interesting blend of artists and their work on this Skinny Puppy Remix CD Remix Dystemper. The sounds range from a clear and impressionable remakes of Rodent
and Addicition, to more minimal tracks such as Worlock, Testure and Chainsaw
and more subtly refined work done with Assimilate and Censor. A few
tracks were remixed with a hearty dose of original sampling, sounds and melodies (Worlock,
Rodent, Testure, Assimilate, Dig It) intact so you can
recognize them, but a few others are left to the listeners imagination (Love In Vein,
Killing Game, Smothered Hope, Spasmolytic) which portray quite a bit
of talent on behalf of the artists who worked on this release.
The tracks chosen for Remix Dystemper are a pretty
hearty cross section from Skinny Puppy past. Ogre and Mark
Walk surprise us with their ingenious delving further into their talents with a
totally new rendition of Smothered Hope, a wonderful change of pace from the
original. Adrian Sherwood's Tinomen is a buzzing speed
driven piece into social unjustice, and Rhys Fulber's rendition of Worlock
is dark, scary and will send chills up your spine.
But the CD doesn't stop there. Autechre's Killing
Game is quite minimal as is Spasmolytic by the Deftones, drum, bassy,
and sassy. Then we have Gunter Schutz of KMFDM with his Opium
Mix of Addiction which is quite dancy as well as Neotropics Love In Vein
which is a blast from the past.
Testure is drum and bass, a tasty treat from God Lives
Underwater, which moves into Dig It by Mark Walk, a futuristic
vocal sampled powerhouse of drums and chaotic blends of choppy hertz. Chris Vreena does
his Tweaker Mix of Assimilate, an excellent track of crashing percussion and
harmony.
Overall Remix Dystemper a pretty good blend of sounds and techniques by a
super batch of artists. Anyone who enjoys Skinny Puppy should definitely get this
release to add to their collection. Let's hope Nettwerk releases another one in the near
future!
