Last year saw sonic sculptor Todd Gautreau delve into an immense world of haunting soundscapes with Tear Ceremony's "Film Decay". Sonogram is his fledgling side project, and with the new name comes a very new direction. The music is still subtle and instrumental, but there are more layers and structure. In a style similar to Aphex Twin, there is a serious, emotional element to the music, balanced with a lighthearted humorous side. Gautreau always seems to title his releases according to the music, as is the case with "Heartbeat Submarines". This title gives the fitting impression of shrill sonar transmissions and humming drones, drenched in a thick aqueous reverb. Sonogram takes the sonorous ambience of Tear Ceremony and twists it into a tight, lo-fi assault on your consciousness.
