Spahn Ranch
Architecture is the brand new album fron LA's Spahn Ranch. Spahn Ranch has released 3 full length albums and 3 ep's since 1992. On the new album, Athan and co. have included their trademark dusk vocals and industrial beats, but have also departed from them. It seems as if Spahn is heading toward a more techno-esque type of sound, without being totally techno. But this album is way far from the tracks heard on Collateral Damage, and possibly their other works as well. This is in no way a negative turn for Spahn Ranch. Tracks such as "Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys," and "Laurels" are still complete with classic Ranch flavor. What is really excellent about this album is the instrumentals that Spahn Ranch provides the listener with. "Incubate" takes samples from Autechre and meshes together a collage of techno-noise. "Solace" basically makes the listener feel like they are in a dark-trapped room. This is somewhat of a departure from The Coiled One, but nevertheless a step ahead in Spahn Ranch's successful music.
