Germany is well known when it comes to quality industrial and EBM music, and it's the stomping grounds of some of the more noteworthy acts in electronic music. But Tobias Schmitt of Suspicion Breeds Confidence lives in Frankfurt, a town that he claims is "really suffering from the techno scene." However you wouldn't be able to guess it after hearing this material. Acrid and textural, with a multitude of layers, this music depicts a war torn electronic landscape overgrown with grassy manipulation. Both the lyrics and the song titles are a mix of German and English, with a humorous flavour dominating the more lyrical tracks. The best example is the introduction entitled "The Downgrade Vortex". A new crop of sinners have made their way to hell, and Schmitt is delivering a witty introduction speech as if he were the devil himself. The last track sees him sharpening his remixing teeth on an unsuspecting song by F. Helix, a band that doesn't have a lot in common with SBC musically. It's an interesting mix, with enough manipulation to sound vaguely similar to the pure SBC material. Most tracks have a lot going on at once, with a polyrhythmic backdrop and experimental electronics working in unison. But it's the subtle melodies buried deep within the coherent clutter that really characterize the songs. The music takes a while to warm up to, and a good pair of headphones helps the process. I can't really say enough good things about this project, so I'll spare you some time and leave it at that. Rest assured, however, that SBC won't go without a label for long.
