Based in France, Ultra Milkmaids have been active since 1993, and have
released a series of tapes, vinyls and CDs on such labels as Rendevous Radikal,
La Deviation Totale, NoiseMuseuM and their own U
Mohol Productions. Their music is of the experimental and ambient variety, as
witnessed on their recent single release on Drone Records -- Jain
Umpoulet.
The single is pressed on white
vinyl, with only Drone Records' symbol printed on the labels on both
sides. It is not possible to know which piece one is listening to, and with this single it
is of course also of little consequence. Both selections conjure up an impression of being
rendered weightless. The compositions sail along, steered by warm ringing atmospheres that
are augmented by subtle, echoing, electronic tinklings. Without ever developing into true
melodies, the constant, floating harmonic waves of sound that Ultra Milkmaids
operate with, have great melodic qualities, and evoke sensations of nostalgia and
melancholy.
The experience of listening to Ultra
Milkmaids' music is not unlike that of being submerged in a sensory deprivation
tank. All other sense impressions fade into non-importance, as the sheets of strange,
spacious sound envelop the listener, and momentarily freezes time.
This first edition of Jain
Umpoulet is limited to 250 copies, and is presented in handmade sleeves with silk
screened graphic designs. Drone Records' releases -- as well as a
catalogue of other interesting music -- are available through mail order from the label.
