Dwayne had his own unique sound, let there be no doubt about that. "Power" is timeless, and simply gets better and better each time you listen to it. I love the way the song begins, it's like we're taking a few cosmic breaths, getting ready to fly away with the duck.....
Philth's "Touched" gets too repetitive (especially the sample), almost annoyingly upbeat. Interesting though, because it gives you the chance to see what part Philth plays in Download. One of the weakest tracks on the cd for sure.
It says in the liner notes to "Zonk Lift" that it was recorded during the Furnace sessions. To me it doesn't sound much like the Furnace album. More like 2/3 Philth and 1/3 aDuck. It's not a bad track but not a great one either.
PlateaU is Key, Philth and Valcic's project. Lean back and enjoy "Grasshopper." Great track and I'm sure it'll be even better after a few hits...... Could've easily been longer than 5 min, and they do fade this song pretty roughly, don't you think? Looking forward to a full length cd from the Ganja-guys.
Yep, "ZXY World" sure is Doubting Thomas. A lot of the sounds are well known from The Infidel and Father Don't Cry. One thing different is the lack of samples. There are a few, but as we all know there were bunches of them on the Doubting Thomas songs. Compared to other DT songs it's an average one I'd say.
Everyone seems to be fiddling with something on their own, but it all blends together to a whole. The Tear Garden's "Georgie The Parasite" has a very "live-ish" sound to it. I hope this collaboration will continue to exist for a long time and that Key one day finds the time to tour with Ka-Spel and crew.
The first part of "Glae Bastards" by Dead Voices On Air, with its crackling and noise, makes me think of a Lynch movie, maybe Eraserhead. The next part still keeps you waiting, anticipating something to happen. The female voice in the third part is beautiful and certainly conjures up images in my head beyond explanation. The fourth part features the sound of Mark's one-string guitar, or whatever it is -- I simply love the sound he can make with that. Like on the two songs "Mallade" and "Hevel" on Furnace. Wicked distortion on the voice.
Kone's "Beflepia" wakes me up very unpleasantly from the dream state I was in while listening to "Glae Bastards". I don't like this song. In my opinion it would've been better to omit this track from the cd. It simply doesn't fit in, and I'm afraid to say that it doesn't really make me want to go out and buy a full length CD with Kone.
"Blowfish." Oh yes. Among the best Doubting Thomas tracks if you ask me. Strange samples that becomes a big part of the song without being repetitive. That's what I've always enjoyed about Doubting Thomas, and Skinny Puppy of course. I'm very curious to hear the "original" version, although Ellard says he didn't take part in any Doubting Thomas sessions (heard this from Tenebrae).
Once more on "Burnout," Dwayne kicks serious ass. Be sure to play this track as loud as possible. Especially the part where he "slows down" a sample (I don't know how else to describe it) -- I simply love that sound!
Skinny Puppy's "Melt" is without a doubt the best track on the cd. It has elements from "Haunted" and the Charlies Family cd. I shake my head in disbelief every time I hear the part where the drums go berserk......I don't think I can ever hear that loud enough........ It surprises me that they call it a Skinny Puppy track. It says in the notes that it's a new song assembled by Key, Valcic and Marshall, so it wasn't done while Skinny Puppy existed. Noise is beautiful... when it's generated by Key and co.
The Tear Garden's "Message 3" is a perfect way to end the CD. Superb vocals (and lyrics?) by Ka-Spel. The guitar is brilliant. Why make it longer than two minutes when all is said and done in that time?
