Mikhail Atom

Astroepos

"I don't accept any limitations, my credo is freedom of search. How to control powerful energies, elements of nature for the sake of peace? The level of culture determines the kind of relationship of Person and Primordial Forces. I am discovering them letting them out like genii, communing with them. Well, maybe, I am not very explicit, music is my language. I just recorded  AstroEpos , listen, you will understand."

Mikhail Atom is a Russian musician who bills himself as a "music writer of hyper cultural high tech music". His album Astroepos was made to be sort of his musical philosophy on life the universe and everything, and in the respect that it's a very deep, meaningful work of music, he accomplishes very well. But he does so in a style that is greatly imitated by many a new age composer.
The music itself is very airy and spacey at times, making one feel almost as if it was meant to be the sound track of a b-grade science fiction film made during the 1980's, rather than a metaphor for life. At other times it almost acts as mood music with long stretches of rain falling amongst trees or the chirping of crickets. It's strongest point is conjuring images of wide open spaces and calm moments far away from civilization, but there are parts where it seems that the artist tries almost too hard to invoke an emotional response from the listener and it's there that he falls short of reaching his goal.
Generally speaking, this is a good album to listen to during quiet moments, or during meditations, or even as a meditation, as the music seems to be very well suited for this purpose. Although it's not an extremely original piece work, it's still well worth a listen, even if it's just to bring a few moments of peaceful thought and recollection into your day.
