Fat Cat used to be one of Londons finest eclectic record shops, then
one day they got shut down by landlords demanding higher rent. So they went on to found a
label which is now one of the worlds best and brightest when it comes to left field
electronica. This 12", the sixth in their Virus series is a perfect example of the
Fat Cat desire to keep pushing boundaries. On one side we have Speedranch and Jansky
Noise, two of England finest purveyors of destructive noise, who over two tracks
deconstruct beats whilst sending Dolemite to the bowels of hells to the tune of rave
sirens and torrential synth destruction. The other side of this single contains
"Guitar Treatments #6 and #7" from Anthony Child (aka UK techno king Surgeon)
and his pal Andrew Read. The results are two slices of stunning ambience that lean towards
the orchestral splendor of Ligeti whilst retaining the darker feel of artists like Coil
and Jim Plotkin. Treatment #7 alone with it's mournful Tangerine Dream like synth lines
make this an essential purchase, not just for those into experimental or ambient music,
but for anyone who likes music that is simply beautiful. |
