"Everything owes its existence, solely and completely to
sound."
This is one
of the best compilations stemming from Invisible Records that I have heard. What makes it
so good? Take another look at the artists, those remixed and mixing, a sonic engagement
between some of the best signed in the scene. Unlike other compilations that tend to be in
a certain genre or two, this release combines a number of different sounds creating a
tasty blend for the listener of electronic beat heavy works.
Each track offers a different sound, new beats, new rhythms and new
blood. The release presents us with some intense speedy percussion/drum&bass with OSO
Finsengi vs Coldcut's "Luxor", TRS-80 with "Bamboo Shoots Battle"
[with a few short blasts of trumpet mixed in], and The Damage Manual vs Orb, spicy
drum&bass on "Sunset Gun". "Never Take Me Alive" is
recreated by The Vice Presidents with powerful drums, great guitars [you can hear a dash
of spagetti western guitar in this track] and excellent vocals that could run chills up
your spine, "Mother!!!!!!!!!" The CD is worth getting for this track alone.
Then there is track 6, Attrition's, "I Am [Eternity]", my
favourite track on the CD, mixed by Chris and Cosey. A delicious GOA Psy-trancey track
that I keep playing over and over again...you can barely sit still NOT get up and dance to
this one. Great mystical arabesque soundscapes and [female] vocals, and sexy rhythms and
strings. Praise ALLAH! Totally delicious work! The Jarod Louche [Chemlab fame] vs Martin
Atkins [Invisible owner and Pigface mastermind] track is yet another mystical GOA-edge
track in part with a sitar in the background, dreamy vocals [Jarod]/melody and tasty
drums/percussion -- "Sexy Boy"!
The release moves into yet another change with Drugbeat vs Haloblack
renewing "My Sacred" with jazzed up drum and rumbling bass yet slower track then
the others. It moves about half way into the track with a grinding guitar, adding a huge
amount of depth to the track. The Mad Capsule Markets vs Alec Empire pretty much says it
right there. Chugging guitar opens the track, with vocals of "CRASH -- POW",
then it moves into hardcore speed drift of chaotic yet precise drum, base and noise at
some of the highest BPMs I've ever heard ! How fast are they? I'd say maybe 200-300+
BPMs... ? Not for the faint hearted!
Things tend to mello out a bit with Sheep On Drugs vs Bagman, of whom
is one Lee Fraser remixing his previous project with "Strange Days", a tasty
drum and bass layered under trickles of hornlike sounds and swishy rhythms. Chemlab vs Pig
is a dreamy piece of work on "Vera Blue". Soft and gentle, spacious and eerie,
"Taking a ride with a pretty face tonight. You know it's wrong but if feels so very
right." The vocals, bzzzps and mzzps, slow caressing beat and keys make this track a
standout.
A1 People vs Metamatics "Do It" is an excellent dance track.
It's kind of trancy with soft dream-like ambient background music but has an edge of
hip-hop rhythm, tasty beats and quirky treated vocals. It's a very mello laid back track.
Lady Galore vs Buzz McCoy turns the mood around to a popish synth-rock hardcore sound on
"Psycho Bitch Sister"... "She's a self-serving psycho, a bitch of a
bitch.." --Lady Galore. Sister Machine Gun vs Sister Machine Gun's "Dead
Concentration" is, well, I'd say it's more like rock and rather boring to me, but SMG
fans would probably like it. The vocals are pretty good but continues on repeat of:
"I belong to the dead generation....." Drums, guitars and a simple melody line
accent the words.
Pigface vs Youth on "Chicksaw" starts out as a bass line
driven drum machine whirring into a heavy guitar and conga's with a touch of tribal congas
but for the most part remains a relatively quiet track, accented with dark drum and bass,
and a good dance beat with an exotic flair. The center of the track is accented with a
heavy guitar, but it all reverts back to that stylish rhythmic blend to the end. Last but
NOT least we have Meg Lee Chin vs Martin Atkins. Meg Lee is an acquired taste for the
discerning listener who is on tour in November again in the USA. This track is one of her
best known, "Heavy Scene". If you haven't yet heard Meg Lee Chin's works, this
is a pretty good introduction, even though Martin remixed her, her vocals remain on this
track. She's a feisty woman in her music creations, not one to hold back her thoughts, and
the music is equally powerful, deep [sometimes twisted] synth bass, guitar, lots of
changes, and a sexy beat, Meg and Martin work as a dynamic duo on this one: "And I
say, Oh No, what you doing... ? I can hardly talk, cuz there's nothin' to
saaaayyyyyy......."
