Kalma is the collaborative work of Brian Herman, Donna Dragotta, Dayayl and Dave DeMarco, Adam Auteri, Janet Planet, Jeff Anthony, Chris Hanes, Moses and Brandon Burdon. The music represents as diverse a range of music and styles as do the contributors. The music on Kalma is speed collage drum and bass to whacked out experimental acid and more. There is one track however defies all the others, "Scrubbing Lockdown", which starts off with 45 seconds of light keyboard tinkings then moves into a heavy dose of speed metal hard core bringing to mind a senario with Ministry while playing soccer against Metallica and listening to some tripped out metal-edge psychedelic jazz in the stadium background as Alien scores a goal.
There are a few tracks that tend to bring up influences like Cevin Key's trippy percussion on Subconscious Communication releases, and Philth's bubbly techno [Download III], as well as ADUCK's work [Goettel from Skinny Puppy and Download]. However there are plenty of original drum beats and synth effects mingled within each [experimental] electronic composition. The drum and bass on Kalma is VERY TASTY STUFF -- wierd beats, chaotic rhythms, jazzy kicks and sub-melodic harmonies. If you like Scorn, Download, early Not Breathing, Puppy and Goettel's work, you'll probably really enjoy Kalma. I'd been waiting for Disko Squid to release their first CD, and I am not in the least bit disappointed with Kalma. It's a strong and incredibly tasty release of original experimental music, drum&bass, and noise. Congratulations to Donna and Brian et.al.
