King Crimson have
been around, of and on, for nearly thirty-two years - a feat of which very few bands can
boast. This latest incarnation of the band, still centered around the astounding guitar
work of Robert Fripp, is an extension of their eighties line-up in that the core of the
band is Fripp and vocalist/guitarist Adrian Belew, with the rest of the band being rounded
out by bassist Trey Gunn and percussionist Pat Mastelotto. Heavy ConstruKction
are recordings taken from the European concert tour of 2000, in support of their earlier
2000 studio release, The ConstruKction of Light.
As one would expect from King Crimson, the music is aggressive and in
your face, splintered and splattered across the stage and your listening room, challenging
the listener to not just listen to, but to simply deal with the quartets musical and
sonic abstractions. King Crimson is not easy listening, but they are very rewarding to
those whose tastes in sound have a very wide range. Most of the CD is drawn from their
earlier studio effort, but, as has always been the case, the band truly shines when they
improvise - essentially create a song on the spot. The manner in which the four musicians
seem to be able to read each others minds, knowing exactly which way to go, never
fails to fascinate.
If youre looking for standard songs, pass King Crimson by. If you
want to be challenged to try something new, Crimsons harsh (then soft) intracacies
may provide you with the direction youve been looking for. This is a very reasonably
priced 3-CD set, with the third disc being primarily improvisations that have been spliced
together from various concerts, essentially creating new songs from parts of three or four
others.
