ever since 'steamhammer', a defining moment in mid-nineties electro/ebm, lights of
euphoria have towed the line admirably. torben schmidt (bloodline) and jimmy machon
(formerly godheads) are old hands at this game and 'fortune teller', a prequel to
forthcoming album 'lightstorm' is a rapid-fire ebm blitz, of sorts. name-dropping litters
the one-sheet as we have gerrit thomas producing and *singing* (tracks 1, 2 & 6) and
some up-and-coming electro acts on the remix agenda, namely project x, aghast view and
re/work.
track 1, the original version of 'fortune teller', while managing a solid blend of 4/4
power and purity has inadvertently patented 'choral cheese', souring an otherwise quality
ebm track. vocals *follow* music note for ******* note a la 'I am your conscience' by
leatherstrip (the solitary black mark on 'confinement'). one hopes that the line; 'another
sad story without happy end my queen of hearts will die' (!) merely scratches the surface
of some deeper esoteric meaning, but on the other hand it probably all makes perfect sense
to the ebm overlords down on the rhine, but from this side of the channel it's pure
pantomime. so how does it sound? the re/worked mix welds acid-techno to gritty industrial
angst without steering too far adrift of the original arrangement while sophie page guests
on the voice mix. swedish ebm darlings project x throw caution to the wind in their remix
of 'fortune teller', a sampled-up electro changeling that bypasses said chorus in favour
of a pterodactyl-like call to arms. aghast view and gerrit thomas join forces on the final
track, gerrit's distinctive 'shouted' vocal style doesn't really wash with me but the
aghasterrorists serve up their trademark brand of bludgeon-beat electro to bring 'fortune
teller' to a happy end (!). absolute highlight is 'inquisition', a mad, bad and quite
brilliant creation right out of the cyber-industrial stable that clicks and whirrs into
life, an absolute brute of a track.
excusing the occasionally daft lyrical content and attendant cheese, all things considered
'fortune teller' is a quality release, the project x mix and 'inquisition' are worth the
admission price alone. manna für das untermenschen? certainly. |
