Math Genius
Corolllary To Formula X
|
Jovian F. is one half of noted unsigned Vancouver production duo Drop
Modulation. He was set to introduce a set of freshly written material under his solo guise
Math Genius at an event called Plur My Ass this past June [99], but complications forced a
no-show and listeners were left hanging as to what extraordinary new sounds had been
wrought from Drop Mod HQ. The material on this cassette is comprised of all the songs
specifically written for that event and never given a public airing, it's been worth the
wait.
Over the course of seventy four minutes the listener is taken from
soothing Orb like ambience to pounding, goofy as all get out happy hardcore in attempt to
fulfill the request for as the liner notes put it, "something fucked up". Well,
i don't think he achieved the goal he was trying to attain but what Jovian has produced is
a slick little excursion that crosses multiple genres providing excitement all the way.
"Sinus congestion" powers up in an attempt at hardcore techno but instead comes
off as something closer to a Jeff Mills track with carnival synth lines. The jazzy
overtones of 'Sinus congestion" although not really deep house do add to a subtle
dancefloor mover that if refined could easily go places. Will this appeal to everyone? No.
Is it worth hunting down? Hell yeah, if not for the glorious tones of 'lower
definition" then simply as a record of the future of Vancouvers music scene.
