As tribute
albums go, "Monochrome" is fairly standard, with groups attempting either to
faithfully recreate or to completely reinvent their favorite Sisters of Mercy songs.
Babylon Will Fall's "Dominion/Mother Russia" is faster and
more danceable than the original-it's more purely pop, but the vocals strive to evoke
Eldritch at every turn. Syria's "Lucretia My Reflection" is also faster and more
pop than the original, but the arrangement is instantly infectious. The vocals are
perfectly suited to the selection, with their balance of sneering indifference and
commanding presence. The Hall of Souls gives a haunting performance of
"Afterhours," which is at once reminiscent and entirely new. Both A Spell Inside
and Soul In Isolation cover "Marian." Soul In Isolation's version highlights the
sheer angst of the track through anguished vocals, while A Spell Inside uses the other
instruments to build the song's sense of tension.
"Monochrome's" liner notes hail the Sisters of Mercy as
"The Grandfathers of Goth." If they are indeed that, they have a lot of grateful
grandchildren.
