For those of you who are not familiar with Propeller,
it is a side project of Mark Spybey of Dead Voices On Air [DVOA], ex-member of Download.
This is a pre-release exclusive sold on tour in December, 1999, usa and is supposed to be
released on Scratch Records. Guests on this release include Eric Pounder [Pounder], Darryl
Neudorf [Abintra], Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus in Dub, Legendary Pink Dots], Sugarpill
[Abintra], and is produced by Mark Spybey and Darryl Neudorf in Vancouver British
Columbia, 1999.
As in the style of DVOA, this release is basically experimental ambient
in nature. There are long slow drawn out rhythms and moody background synths. The release
also brings out a fair amount of ambient noise with stronger swirling noise beats.
Sub-melodics and pulsing abrasive phzzzzt's accent moving harmonies. It's quite a
beautiful release.
One short outstanding track, "the great generator" is very
mello with acoustic guitar [I'd guess this is Eric Pounder's work], which sets the stage
for a dreamlike fantasy, light and soft. Drifing synths with spacious timbres and pulsing
beats highlight "blue stern". Melancholic acoustic guitar [Pounder again?],
seems to contradict intermittent buzzing and noise which creates the basis for "karl
marx stadt". "smug fighting ways" is a noisy piece of work using fast
pulsing static sound that sounds someone is welding metal to metal in fast motion.
"positively allergic to color", the last track on the release, is an eerie
pulsing scratchy bass beat with a sub-harmonic drone swirl like that of bumblebees far off
in the distance. Another great track.
Overall this release should be of interest to those of you who follow
DVOA and Marks related works in the genres of ambient noise. This is an exquisite release
with excellent production and composition. My copy was ripped to CDrom and has no cover
art or CD writing but did come with a piece of paper with tracks and guests/thank
you to Alexander Varty. It was covered in thin white [rice?] paper with a silver mantra
stamped onto it with Spybeys autograph. |
