"Motive" is a unique sound experience comprised of a talented
plethora of artists and sounds alike. Rotating around the "experimental acid-rock
anarchist improv" end of the spectrum, Pseudo Buddha claims to use no synths in their
creations! Instrumentation is diverse with sitar (strings), sarod (percussion), and home
made modified toys [Bobdog], kalimba, alto sax, bamboo sax, melodica, digital sax,
sawblade, squeeze toy, handclaps and bicycle horn [James Cobb], B-flat clarinet,
ocarinas, percussion [Stephanie Key], didjeridoos, voice, old Ibanez delay unit [Daniel
Upton], electric guitar, signal processing, electric cello, stompboxes [James H. Sidlo],
electric bass [Quinn the Eskimo] and percussion [Gil]. What a lineup!
These talented individuals perform a "fluid improvisational
permutation" of eclectic music. Beats are exotic, grooves are
"polyrhythmic" and at times the music is either highly charged or simply
meditative, laid back and hypnotic. A distinctive world beat comes through on this
release, as well as an Eastern influence with ethnic instruments. Guitars further the
amount of dimension to the release using varied sounds and distortions. The percussion is
also very tasty, ranging from [real] drum and bass, exotic beat instruments, strings, and
sound manipulations.
This unique music was professionally mastered by Robert Rich, and screams excellence. If you are down in
Texas, watch for upcoming live performances listed on the Pseudo Buddha web site. I can
only imagine what a great time a person could have in hearing them live.
