The Secular present a release of gothic punk with "Hatesex",
fueled by intense female vocals and driving rhythms. Established openers for many goth
rock legends like Christian Death and Electric Hellfire Club, The Secular stays
close to the vein of such bands.
Grating industrial rhythms punctuate each thunderous track, creating a
chaotic mindset that never goes away. That fact somehow clutters the music, however.
Guitar harmonics are intensely pumped through feedback, and often the songs are based on
textural results of the feedback. This makes for a painful listening at times. Fans of
gutteral guitar with hard rhythms will eat that up, though.
The female voice does provide a fair amount of countering to this; however at times her
voice reaches the gutteral stages as well.
Fans of Christian Death and other bands of that nature would enjoy
this, although a little more progression in the tracks may result in a wider audience and
interest factor. |
