One of the most eclectic releases I have received, Jon Ray AKA
Skincage, sends the listener into an aural world of twisted soundscapes, vibrating
swirling timbre, delicate atmospheres and spooky yet reverent vox. Stemming from
North Carolina, USA, Jon Ray has proven to be an effective and diligent composer in
electronic experimental music with Axon, the first release on Malignant Records
Antibody.
The music of Axon is fascinating. The tracks are very
diverse with sounds ranging from Celtic violin backed with dark textured ambience,
"An Homage To Pestilence", slow waves of rhythms, swaying melodies, synthscapes,
growling gurgles, GOA tinged beats, noisy but gentle insertions, sampling, lots of looping
and layering, clinks and clanks, and background vox that sends chills to the bone.
Rays' sense of programming is incredible. Phil Easter [Iron Halo
Device, Stone Glass Steel, Malignant Records], who mastered the CD, did, as usual, a
superb job on Axon. This release is totally recommended for the experimental
electro fan. Suggested use: headphones, background music, kick
back and space out, DJ air play, seances, getting rid of unwanted guests [turn it up], and
with an occasional or frequent bowl of your best ganja, whichever you prefer, or simply
none at all ! Hail SKINCAGE! Excellent release. *drool*
Axon is hauntingly beautiful and knows no boundaries. It's timeless.
