Writhe is completely different from all the works I have heard to date by Paul Molyneux which includes his projects: Drowned, and Ocosi [Radius Suck, Ovoid]. He also has a relatively new release on Negative Air Research which, coupled Mick Harris beats and Pauls ingenuity created IN. Writhe however is in the dark ambient vein. This project reinforces that Paul Molyneux is quite a diverse engineer in programming and composition in these various genres. He masters in drum & bass, experimental, and noise/guitar, and unabashedly has put himself smack dab in the middle of Ovoid, an evil rush of penetrating soundscapes.
Ovoid is best heard after smoking a bowl, as background music in your daily routine, or for those visitors you'd like to get rid of early on, as I think it would most likely send anyone who isn't into dark scary ambient out the door. The sounds are at times rumbling and growling, deep and bassy with pitched timbres of synths and horn-like fabrications. Mainly without any beats, the music is in part subtly noisy, but flowing and is very captivating from beginning to end. An excellent release for DJ airplay on an experimental music program.
