People Like us

Hate People Like Us

Vicki Bennett has been producing music and art under the name People like Us since 1991. Her unique style of music is akin to fellow dadaist sound samplers Negativland and John Oswold, a cut and paste destruction of what we think culture may be. For this album, a select group of fellow sound manipulators were commissioned to remix pieces from the 1997 PLU album entitled "Jumble Massive". The results are stunning most of the time with only the occasional mis-step marring this fine collection of remixes interspersed with interludes from Vicki herself. Collage masters Negativland and Stock, Hausen and Walkman do PLU proud, manipulating samples into a torrid sonic soup which is both disturbing and strangely playful. Other standouts include Mika Vainio from Pansonic with his glacial drones and Death In June who warp "Lycra rally" into a strange ambient funk workout with Caribbean undertones. Only respected experimental pioneers Boyd Rice and Coil step a foul, the Coil remix sounding especially like it was ripped directly from their "Worship The Glitch" album from a few years back. Another fine representation of artists taking the media and chopping it up to make a statement yet not losing the plot or their heads up their own asses.
