Albums like this never cease to amaze me. You’d think with one band like Electric Hellfire Club, or The Young Gods, or even Sister Machine Gun, we wouldn’t need three more let alone the other hundreds crawling from the woodwork these days. Unfortunately this album is not Cleopatra, so there’s no fair warning as to the contents. Personally when I see that little Cleo eye I drop the cd as if it were blowing biochemical warfare in my face.
The fact is, I am always meeting new and exciting people that keep the entire back catalog of Cleo and Zoth in the back seats of their cars. No matter how man bands pick up a guitar and an Ensoniq and an Alessis drum machine and say, “Hey, if Gravity Kills can get paid... why can’t we?”, someone seems to agree.

Templebeat
Four Italians chock full of teenage angst and the latest CD from chemlab. The drums remind me of what Ministry was doing ten years ago, the guitars consist of a few power chords under heavy distortion, and the keyboards are little noise fill ins that you hear in MTV industrial. The production on this is pretty sweet, I’m sure these guys have a future on public access TV, but the style is bland. The vocals are you generic Wax Trax distortion, low volume rants. As much as I can’t appreciate this CD, I found my self bobbing around to a few tracks from these guys. They have groove, but it’s the kind of groove you get into and then slap yourself for enjoying once you realize what you’re doing.

And Christ Wept
Yeah, you’ve probably heard this before. Again, someone got a drum machine, a few distortion pedals, a guitar, and a cheap keyboard. This stuff is much more down tuned and sounds a lot like the stuff Christian industrial labels were realeasing five years ago or so. The vocal effects are kind of nice, but they’re almost to quiet to actually hear. I don’t want to dance here, I don’t want to groove, I don’t want to sing along or care what they are talking about. I’m just wondering why.

Skinflick Productions
Industrial and sex. That’s new. I’m starting to get the feeling that no one wants to let go of the Wax Trax days. Either that or they’re pissed at TVT for making Wax Trax into vulgar things. This reminds me of a mix of really old Frontline Assembly and some old Thrill Kill Kult. These guys would be better off as a coverband, but maybe they had a stroke of genius once and don’t want anyone to hear it.
Back to the core of it all, when I wanted to hear Frontline Assembly, Sister Machine Gun, or Thrill Kill Kult.... I listen to them, not the next best thing. Some of you however can’t get enough and maybe have an ear for the differences. Not me. By all means then enjoy this disk to it’s fullest, maybe we’ll see them on Cleopatra Records one day.
